eSupercharger to Enable Extreme Engine Downsizing

Project with Mahle Powertrain to demonstrate the possibilities in engine downsizing using high-powered 48V e-Superchargers.  The resulting engine achieved higher specific power output than any production engine and significant CO2 emissions benefits with negligible turbo-lag.  The engine was installed by Mahle Powertrain into a VW Golf GTi along with a 48V supply net and start-stop system.

  • Circa 10kW (input power) liquid cooled eSupercharger
  • 120,000 rpm centrifugal compressor, grease lubricated bearings

Mahle Powertrain Engine

  • 1.2 litre, 3-cylinder gasoline
  • 2-stage boosting - eSupercharger & mechanical turbocharger
  • Circa 260ps - 161kW/litre
  • 313Nm @ 1,200 rpm
