Kevin Gray is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers with over 20 years experience in high performance engineering environments including Motorsport, Automotive, Aerospace and Oil and Gas.  Highly proactive, delivery focused and with a passion for detail, he has a proven track record of delivering high quality engineering solutions within tight time and budget constraints.

Graduating in 1993 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southampton, Kevin started his engineering career as a Production Engineer with Ilmor Engineering.  During this time he developed expertise in manufacturing techniques (including casting, forging, milling, turning, grinding and fabrication) and jig and tool design; skills which later allowed him to design products efficient in both function and manufacture.

Kevin continued his career at Ilmor Engineering moving firstly into Engine Design (working on the Indy engine program) and then into Test Operations where he became the Design Team Leader working on projects including the Formula 1 transient dynamometer.  This led to the development of a broad engineering skill base covering engines, high speed transmissions (gearboxes, couplings), bearing systems, lubrication, cooling, instrumentation, control systems and testing methodology.

Kevin moved to Torquemeters Ltd in 2003 where he built on his broad knowledge; engineering and leading several high-profile projects ranging from individual test rigs to complete turnkey test facilities for high performance rotating equipment applications.  Customers included Lockheed Martin, United States Air Force, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, John Crane and several UK Universities.  Machine power ratings varied up to 1MW and speed ratings up to 130,000 rpm.  During his time at Torquemeters Ltd Kevin also developed knowledge of high speed / power permanent magnet electric motors, successfully developing, installing and commissioning machines for a test rig application rated to 32,000 rpm, 330kW (continuous), 660kW (peak).

In 2013 Kevin joined Aeristech Ltd as Chief Engineer, bringing together previous experience of motorsport, engines, high-speed rotor dynamics and electric machines and drives to develop high power, speed and efficiency permanent magnet electric superchargers and controllers.  During this time he has taken the technology from very early prototype stage (TRL 1) to vehicle demonstrator / pre-production prototype (TRL 7).  Aeristech’s e-superchargers are now industry leading in terms of performance and have enabled the company to initiate negotiations with automotive Tier 1’s for technology licensing.

Kevin has formed Grayway Engineering to exploit this broad engineering experience, providing a flexible and cost effective service to “help engineers turn good ideas into reality”.  From a single day consultancy to long-term design and development programs, Grayway Engineering can provide an experience-backed, flexible service to help your projects succeed.  Contact us to discuss your requirements.
